“It is a dogma of the Roman Church that the existence of God can be proved by natural reason. Now this dogma would make it impossible for me to be a Roman Catholic. If I thought of God as another being like myself, outside myself, only infinitely more powerful, then I would regard it as my duty to defy him.”—Ludwig Wittgenstein (via fuckyeahexistentialism)
"The battle over the Bible is increasingly polarized between the absolutism of inerrantists who claim to speak for all Christians and the scorn of secularists who find easy targets for ridicule. With an engaging combination of honesty, goodwill, and wit, Thom Stark offers a vital third way. He explodes the “hermeneutics of convenience” of self-styled inerrantists, examines some of the most objectionable aspects of the Bible, and refuses throughout to sacrifice moral decency on the altar of inerrantist dogma—which is, after all, as much a human construction as the biblical criticism that inerrantists deride. This is must reading for Christians who have agonized over their own private doubts about Scripture—and for others who have given up hope that evangelical Christians can practice intelligent, moral interpretation of the Bible." - Neil Elliott Adjunct instructor, United Theological Seminary
While floodwaters may be covering a large portion of Pakistan, the response of ministries reveals the truth in the hearts of Christ’s followers…
Wow, reverent1, you are a complete asshole, just like your pretend “god”.
UPDATE: Apparently reverant1 does not believe that all non-christians will burn in hell eternally with no sense of reprieve. Apparently the missionary organisation referred to in the article does not believe that either.
So I apologize to them both.
I do not know quite what they believe, because neither say so clearly… But it seems it’s something to do with revelling in being persecuted. So at least they have that to be grateful for.
“…the lord doesn’t work in mysterious ways, but in ways that are indistinguishable from his non-existence. It seems to me that there is nothing in the Christian scriptures, no sentence, paragraph, or idea, that couldn’t be anything more than the product of the humans alive at the time that the apparently divinely inspired scriptures and ideas were “revealed” - SilverBullet
Go the Gospel teaches that God created the universe knowing in advance that he would torture eternally in hell almost everyone who ever lived, and he would “save” only a relatively tiny number of people? Wow, if that’s what the Gospel teaches, then no wonder Christianity is such a stupid religion.
And ya know, I can reword that Bible verse for you:
Why think when you can have the Bible think for you?
"Bible believing" christians don’t worship "god" or "jesus". They worship the Bible.
Common Sense Atheism podcast CPBD 061: Paul Almond:
I’m quite happy to say that there is no God in the same way that I will say that is a cup of coffee on the table. It doesn’t mean I’m claiming 100% proof. All it means is that I’m satisfied that the extreme nature of the God concept — and we’ve been discussing that earlier in this interview, why I think the God concept is so extreme — combined with the lack of evidence needed to support such an extreme claim makes it so implausible, and it makes for chances that that hypothesis is correct so ridiculously low that, essentially, it is probably less likely than lots of other things, like cups of coffee being aliens in disguise, that we would never even consider referring to in normal everyday conversation.
“Man simply invented God in order not to kill himself, that is the summary of universal history down to the moment.”—Dostoyevsky ”The Possessed” (1872) (via fuckyeahexistentialism) (via espritsdefolie)
“The glory of Israel will fly away like a bird, for your children will die at birth or perish in the womb or never even be conceived. Even if your children do survive to grow up, I will take them from you. It will be a terrible day when I turn away and leave you alone. I have watched Israel become as beautiful and pleasant as Tyre. But now Israel will bring out her children to be slaughtered.” O LORD, what should I request for your people? I will ask for wombs that don’t give birth and breasts that give no milk. The LORD says, “All their wickedness began at Gilgal; there I began to hate them. I will drive them from my land because of their evil actions. I will love them no more because all their leaders are rebels. The people of Israel are stricken. Their roots are dried up; they will bear no more fruit. And if they give birth, I will slaughter their beloved children.”—WHY IS THE BIBLE SO CREEPY or Hosea 9:11-16 NLT (via deadrow)
The Bible is wrong about science, history, polytheism, medicine, prophesy, it's own composition and the life of Jesus. It is insane to think it must be right about salvation. Burden of proof is on believers - all a sceptic must show is that it is reasonable not to believe in the exclusive "truth" of christianity and that's it - game over - for your religion.
